What the OIG exclusion list is

The LEIE lists people and companies excluded from Medicare, Medicaid and other federal health care programs, for reasons such as health care fraud, patient abuse and licensing actions. Federal health care programs will not pay for items or services furnished, ordered or prescribed by an excluded party, and an organization that employs or contracts with one can face civil monetary penalties.

How often to check

OIG updates the list every month. Many provider groups screen every employee, contractor and vendor monthly, and state Medicaid agencies are required to check their enrolled providers against it every month. Screen new hires and new vendors before they start.

Confirming a match

The LEIE often has no NPI for a listed person, so name matches are common. Confirm a possible match on exclusions.oig.hhs.gov, where you can verify it with a Social Security number or EIN.

Questions

Does a match mean the person or company is excluded?
No. The check compares names only, and many people share a name. Treat every result as a possible match and confirm it on the official site with a date of birth, address, NPI or other identifier before acting on it.
Do you store the names I search?
No. Names are used to run the search and are not saved. If you ask for the full report, we keep your email address so we can send it.
How current are the lists?
Every result shows the date of the file it was checked against. We reload the OIG list each month after OIG publishes it, and the SAM.gov and OFAC lists each week.
